De Spaanse justitie eist van Schotland de uitlevering van Clara Ponsatí, de verdreven minister van de Catalaanse regering en mede-organisator van het referendum over onafhankelijkheid die weer is terug gekeerd naar haar Schotse leerstoel. Zij wordt beschuldigd van seditie en rebellie en dat kan de 61 jarige hoogleraar 25 tot 30 jaar gevangenisstraf opleveren.
“The 61-year-old professor of economics at St Andrews University had helped to organise a peaceful independence referendum in her native Catalonia and thereafter to serve in its short-lived government. The charge of violent rebellion follows those distressing scenes in which vicious packs of unarmed Catalan citizens attacked police shields and batons with their heads and left the boys in the riot gear bereft and traumatised.” (Kevin McKenna in The Guardian van 8 april 2018)
Mooi gezegd. Kevin McKenna kwalificeert vervolgens de lauwe reactie van de EU op het Spaanse staatsgeweld als voorspelbaar: betaal gewoon je lidmaatschap en dan kijken we wel weg. Weinig Europese Unie lidstaten hebben Spanje gevraagd om te komen met een rechtvaardiging van het staatsgeweld en de draconische vervolging van de leiders van de Catalanisten. En dan stelt McKenna de hamvraag: “No one has asked: “So why did you insist on violent suppression when you could simply have ignored the referendum and opted not to recognise it?””
Een mogelijk antwoord hoorde ik vanmorgen bij het ontbijt (van Feliz): wie heeft het nu nog over het alomvattende corruptieschandaal van de regeringspartij PP? De bliksemafleider doet zijn werk. Het speelt zeker een rol. Maar het is misschien ook zo, stel ik op persoonlijke titel ter overweging voor, dat de Spaanse nationalisten moeilijk anders kunnen of willen doen dan met hun militaristische laars te blijven trappen op “de anderen” die maar niet willen meedoen aan de eeuwige glorificatie van “De Monarchie” (mijn meest recente inspiratiebron voor deze persoonlijke observatie is Ramón Cotarelo & Jose Manuel Roca, La Antitransición. La derecha neofranquista y el saqueo de España, Tirant Humanidades: Valencia 2015, 88-89).
De Schotten lopen nooit weg van een goed gevecht, stelt McKenna vast, en zij zullen zich hevig verzetten tegen de overdracht / uitlevering van Ponsatì. En daarbij zijn ze de geschiedenis niet vergeten. McKenna geeft haarfijn aan welke geschiedenis echt relevant is in deze zaak. “Ponsatí’s fate will rest on the efforts of her Scottish lawyer, Aamer Anwar, and the rigorous application of Scots law and a legal system that can trace its lineage to the 12th century. In that Edinburgh courtroom, it won’t be Ponsatí’s conduct that will be scrutinised but the conduct of a country still, it seems, haunted by General Franco, another Spanish leader who attacked his own people.
During the Spanish civil war, 549 Scottish volunteers fought Franco and his fascists after he led a rebellion against the outcome of a democratic election. The volunteers were backed by funds raised in the grassroots Aid for Spain campaign in Scotland, which was among the republic’s biggest financial supporters at that time.
More than 80 years later, another Scottish grassroots fund is helping its adopted Catalan citizen escape the clutches of the successors to Franco.”
